Caricature Activity

In order to learn more about digital textures, the use of photographs and stylisation and observation, we were asked to make caricatures of celebrities using multiple photos of the person synthesized together as a starting point before modifying the images to make a more seamless caricature.

Alternately, we could take a well know cartoon character and use photos and textures to render a realistic version of them.

I chose the webcomic author Andrew Hussie since he both had a cartoon avatar alongside a very distinctive face and lots of available photos I could reference. I decided to both make a simple caricature and then go a step further and turn that caricature into a rendered version of his cartoon persona as a bonus way to push myself.

Process

First, I got together some photo reference as well as a reference of how he draws himself for later.

I took features from each picture and made this monstrosity.

Then it was time to start making some

revisions.

This started out mostly with transforming before I went into adding colours and painting over images to make them fit together better. You can see at one point I regret bringing in his chin and make his face more of an oval

the final step was to change his shirt colour and remove his pupils and mouth

it looks unnerving which I think fits with the spirit of the exercise, though I could have taken it a step further and used some open source textures to maybe start re-rendering him I think this was a wise stopping point
