Creative Writing with Claire

In this class we did a lot of exercises with prompts and having to write very fast. I trained a lot of creative muscles as well as speed and I made a lot of things over the course of the lessons.

Down below are links to google docs full of work from each class as well as a little write up and any related images or final outcomes from each lesson further down. Overall I really enjoyed this module

Class 1 - Launch day + Time Challenge

This day was pretty straightforward, we did a lot of timed tasks where we had 5 minutes or 10 seconds or other lengths of time to write bits of stories or scripts based on prompts we were set. It was cool as a way to try out different methods from descriptive writing to scripting and we learned about the concept of Pantsing.

Class 2 - Story Structure + Pacing

In this class we chose a book to break down into a rising and falling structure to see what makes a good story. I chose Matilda because I know the story well and like the way it flows.

Class 3 - Short + long form writing

This class was a good test in how long you can stretch an idea you were only just given, it was interesting to quickly shove a plan together and then just go for as long as you can manage. I feel pretty happy with some of the results from this day.

Class 4 - Comic-Script-Comic

In this class we brought a comic page and translated it into a script. I chose the first page in a scene from I Hate Fairyland where they fight some zombie Fauns. We then put the scripts in the chat and each chose one to make into a comic page, trying to emulate what we think the original looked like. I chose Pearl's HunterxHunter script and while there was some miscommunication of sound effects it was overall pretty artist friendly and aside from getting character designs mixed up a little it was relatively accurate to the original comic page she was describing to me. Unfortunately nobody chose my script so I have no clue how it would have been interpreted.

Class 5 - Scrambled Scripts

The final script based session before being set loose to do our final 6 page scripts was the scrambled scripts project. We had event prompts and needed to script comics where whatever events we random drew from the pool ended up happening in each panel, although of course it was up to interpretation. The first two of these I did were continuations of a single story about a swap creature and a human hanging out and then the third prompt set was a story about some deep sea creature. The longer story became my basis for my 6 page comic script.

Class 6 - Lymerics

The very last session before we switched to SMT and tutorials was learning what a lymeric was and how to write one, we then wrote 5 each on the subject of things that made us happy and needed to select one to turn into a two page spread for a book.
